Roofing

Roofing Contractor in Davenport & the Quad Cities

For more than forty-five years, Peterson Roofing has been putting roofs on homes and businesses across the Quad Cities. We are family-owned — started by Jody Peterson in the 1980s and run today by Jody and his son Ryan — and we have built the business on a simple principle: no surprises. You get an honest assessment, a clear price, and work done properly. You pay nothing until it is finished.

Whether you need a full replacement, a repair after a storm, or an inspection because you are not sure what you are looking at, we will tell you straight what your roof needs.

Our roofing services

Roof replacement

A complete tear-off and rebuild. We strip the old roof down to the deck, inspect and replace any damaged sheathing, and install a full new system — underlayment, ice and water shield in the vulnerable areas, flashing, shingles and ventilation. Doing it this way means we see exactly what condition the structure is in rather than covering it over.

Roof repair

Missing shingles after a wind event, a leak around a chimney or skylight, a failed pipe boot, damaged flashing in a valley. Most repairs are straightforward and considerably cheaper than replacement. If a repair will get you several more good years, we will say so rather than push you toward a new roof.

Storm and hail damage

The Quad Cities get real hail and real straight-line wind. Impact damage is easy to miss from the ground and often does not leak immediately — it quietly shortens the life of the roof instead. We inspect free of charge, document what we find, and give you a written report you can take to your insurer.

Commercial and low-slope roofing

Flat and low-slope commercial roofs are a different discipline from residential shingle work — different materials, different detailing, different ways they fail. We work on both, and we handle commercial properties throughout the Quad Cities.

Metal roofing

Metal systems cost more up front and last a great deal longer — commonly past forty years — while standing up to hail and wind better than asphalt. We install Decra stone-coated steel among other systems, which gives you the durability of metal with the appearance of a traditional shingle or tile roof.

Skylights

We install and replace VELUX skylights, and we repair the flashing around existing ones. Skylights leak at the flashing far more often than through the glass itself, and that is usually a fixable problem rather than a reason to remove them.

Built for Quad Cities weather

A roof here works harder than the national averages assume. Winter brings the full freeze-thaw cycle — meltwater running down the roof, refreezing at the cold eaves, and backing up under the shingles as ice dams. Spring and summer bring hail and straight-line winds. Summer heat then bakes whatever the winter left behind.

That combination is why we install ice and water shield along the eaves and in the valleys rather than treating it as optional, and why we pay close attention to attic ventilation. A poorly ventilated attic cooks shingles from underneath and can take years off an otherwise sound roof.

It is also why we recommend Class 4 impact-resistant shingles to most homeowners here. Class 4 is the highest impact rating a shingle can earn — tested by dropping a two-inch steel ball from twenty feet and confirming the mat does not crack. In a hail-prone area that matters on its own, and many insurers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof. It is worth asking yours before you choose.

What a roof replacement looks like, start to finish

1

Free inspection.

We get on the roof and look at it properly — shingles, flashing, valleys, penetrations, ventilation and the state of the decking where we can see it.
2

Written estimate.

Scope and price laid out clearly, with the material options explained so you can see what you are choosing between and what each one carries for warranty.
3

Scheduling.

We give you a realistic date rather than an optimistic one, and we keep you posted if weather moves it.
4

Tear-off.

The old roof comes off down to the deck. Anything damaged underneath gets replaced before we go further — and we show you what we found.
5

Installation.

Underlayment, ice and water shield, flashing, shingles and ventilation, installed to the manufacturer’s specification so the material warranty stands.
6

Clean-up.

Debris cleared, and the yard and driveway run over with a magnet for nails. We do this properly — nails in tires and bare feet are how a good job gets remembered badly.
7

Final walkthrough, then payment.

We walk it with you. You pay when the work is done and you are satisfied with it.

Choosing your roofing material

Most homes here end up on architectural asphalt shingles, and for good reason — they balance cost, appearance and lifespan better than anything else on the market. But it is worth understanding the options before you decide.

Material Typical Life Best For Trade-off
Three-tab asphalt 15–20 years Tight budgets, rental property Shortest life, least wind resistance
Architectural asphalt 25–30 years Most Quad Cities homes Costs more than three-tab up front
Class 4 impact-resistant 25–30 years Hail-prone locations Higher cost, often offset by insurance discount
Stone-coated steel 40+ years Long-term ownership Highest up-front cost

We install products from Owens Corning, GAF, CertainTeed, Malarkey, IKO, Atlas and Decra, with VELUX skylights and Lomanco ventilation. If you want to see what a color will actually look like on your house before committing, use the Owens Corning visualizer on this page — it is a lot more useful than a swatch.

Storm damage and insurance claims

If you have had hail or high wind, get the roof looked at even if nothing is leaking. Impact damage knocks the protective granules off the shingle and exposes the mat underneath. The roof keeps working for a while and then fails early — often after the window for filing a claim has closed.

We inspect free, photograph what we find, and give you a written report to file with your insurer. If an adjuster comes out, we will meet them on the roof so the damage gets assessed properly and nothing is overlooked. We are not your claims representative and we do not negotiate the settlement for you — that is between you and your insurer — but we make sure the evidence is complete and we know how to talk to an adjuster.

What it costs, and how you pay

Roofing prices depend on the size and pitch of the roof, how complicated the layout is, the material you choose, and what we find under the old shingles. Anyone quoting you a firm price without getting on the roof is guessing.

What we can tell you is how the money works. Inspections and estimates are free. There is no down payment — nothing up front, nothing for materials. You pay when the job is finished and you are happy with it. After forty-five years in this community we would rather earn it than hold it.

How often should I have my roof inspected?
Once a year, and again after any major storm. An annual inspection catches small problems — a lifted shingle, a failed pipe boot, a separating flashing seam — while they still cost very little to fix. In the Quad Cities we also recommend a look after any hail or high-wind event, because impact damage often does not leak straight away. Our inspections are free, and if you do not need work doing we will tell you that.
Start with the metal. Gutters, downspouts, vents and flashing bruise visibly where hail struck, and that is the easiest tell from the ground. Then look for granules — a build-up of coarse, sand-like grit in your gutters or at the bottom of a downspout after a storm is shingle surface that is no longer where it should be. On the shingles themselves, hail leaves dark, soft bruises in a random scattered pattern. Please do not climb up to look; hail-damaged shingles are more fragile than they appear. Call us and we will inspect it free.
A three-tab asphalt roof will typically give you fifteen to twenty years here. Architectural shingles commonly run twenty-five to thirty, and metal systems can go well past forty. Our climate is harder on a roof than national averages assume — the full freeze-thaw cycle through winter, real summer heat, and a genuine hail and straight-line wind season. Attic ventilation makes a large difference too. A poorly ventilated attic cooks shingles from underneath and can take years off an otherwise good roof.
We tear off, every time. Layering a new roof over an old one is cheaper up front, but it hides whatever is going on underneath — damaged decking, rot around a chimney, an old leak working away quietly. It also adds significant weight and traps heat, which shortens the life of the new shingles, and many manufacturers reduce or void material coverage on a layered installation. Tearing off means we see the deck, replace what needs replacing, and start your new roof on a sound surface. We will show you what we find before we cover it back up.
Class 4 is the highest impact rating a shingle can earn. It is tested by dropping a two-inch steel ball onto the shingle from twenty feet and confirming the mat underneath does not crack — roughly the force of a large hailstone. In a hail-prone area like ours that matters on its own merits, and many insurers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof. It is worth asking yours before you decide, because over the life of the roof that discount can offset a good part of the difference in cost.
There are two, and they cover different things. The manufacturer warrants the materials, and the length depends on the product line you choose — we will show you exactly what each option carries before you decide. Separately, we warrant our workmanship, which covers the installation itself. You will get both in writing with your estimate so they are in one place. [CONFIRM: state Peterson’s workmanship warranty period here.]
Yes. Commercial and low-slope roofing is a different discipline from residential shingle work — different materials, different detailing, different failure points — and we handle both. If you manage a commercial property anywhere in the Quad Cities, call us and we will come and assess it.
